Consulted with the developer who says

Some newer versions of Firefox have known cookie issues. Firefox
"forgets" the cookies though it's explicitely told to keep 'em
permanent.
... really annoying. No known solution other than .. using another
browser.

Mystery:
My FF stopped working for some weeks, now it's keeping cookies again for
no specific reason.
