Re: WHITTIKER
In Response To: WHITTIKER ()
If your family branches separated in the 1800's, there are likely several variations used by different branches. In earlier times it was most usual for a county clerk or official to record any documents, and the greater percentage of individuals were of limited literacy. As families split up and and especially if they moved to separate areas of the state, different spellings were the one that became eventually accepted -- not "right" or "wrong" -- just the one that a certain branch of the family came to commonly use. In searching ANY records, be sure to check for alternative spellings -- these may have been simply the way the person RECORDING the data thought the name should be spelled, and may not refllect the way the family themselves preferred to spell it.
