indeed, libraries are wonderful resources -- many times underutilized by the community. I encourage EVERYONE to check out the resources at the nearest library and ask:

What programs are available to patrons on the computers?

Which branch of the library system has the most family history/genealogy resources?

Do they participate in interlibrary loan?

Which branch has microfilm/microfiche readers and local newspaper archives?

Which branch will allow one to order in LDS microfilms? (Many times library hours are much more convenient than FHC hours)

Ask -- if they don't have these things, asking may add to the customer demand.
If they do have them, you may be able to use Heritage Quest or Ancestry FREE at the library (in St Louis you can use heritage Quest with your library card number). Don't forget to checked out the printed material available (remember BOOKS?!?) But ASK --- most librarins are glad to help someone interested in research.
