Deaf, dumb, blind, idiotic
There is a column on the 1870 census that asks if the person listed is "Deaf, dumb, blind, insane or idiotic." I have twice come across relatives for whom that column was marked with an "X" or check mark. How reliable is this notation? Can anyone shed some light on how this column was used or misused in relation to people of color.
