Re: 2nd Cousin Melvin O Eubanks was a Tuskegee Airman

This posting prompted me to investigate a GROVES family rumor (my daughter's line) that one of their ancestors was a Tuskegee Airman. I found the listing below on their official website:

Groves, Weldon K 43-F-SE 6/30/1943 2nd Lt. 0805985 Edwardsville KS

The listing below most likely refers to an elder relative of his, also named Weldon:

Wyandotte County, Kansas Farmer Directory, 1921
Name: Weldon Groves
Post Office: Edwardsville Gen Del
Township: Delaware
Settled: 1882
Page: 197

Weldon, the Airman, is found in 1920 with his parents in Delaware, Wyandotte, Kansas:
Walter P Groves 36, HOH, abt 1884 KS/KY/MO, Mu/M
Alice Groves 25, wife, abt 1895 Eng/KS/Eng, Mu/F, yr immig'd unk
Waldan[Weldon K.], son, abt 1917 KS, Mu/M
Jaier[Joice/Joyce], dtr, abt 1919 KS, Mu/F

Nextdoor is the family of Weldon's grandfather who was famous at that time for being the "Potato King" of Kansas:

James[Jamison] G. Graves (Actual name Junius G. GROVES)
Home in 1920: Delaware, Wyandotte, Kansas
Age: 58 years
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Birthplace: Kentucky
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Matilda
Father's Birth Place: Kentucky
Mother's Birth Place: Kentucky
Marital Status: Married
Race: Black
Sex: Male
Home owned: Own
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Image: 634
Other Household Members:
Matilda Graves 56, wife, abt 1864 MO/KY/MO, B/F
Carnelan Graves 21, son, abt 1899 KY, Mu/M
Theodore Graves 16, son, abt 1904 KY, Mu/M

They are surrounded by several families who were aunts, uncles and cousins of young Weldon at that time. His GF Junius reportedly built himself and each of his children their own separate mansions. Little did any of them know that young Weldon, just a toddler at that time, would grow up to become a part of one of America's most famous organizations. Their legend endures to this day.

I also found an Edward Cooper from Sharon, LA, on the list of airmen. My research continues to find out if he is connected to my ancestor, Eddie Cooper. Thanks for the "jump start".
