If anyone is interested in a hymnbook, there is a fairly new hymnal (copyright 2001) called "African American Heritage Hymnal, 575 Hymns, Spirituals and Gospel Songs,"... "preserving and promoting the best congregational music of our ecumenical African American Christian tradition."

Another good history of songs of the African American Church is "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, 101 Best-Loved Psalms, Gospel Hymns, and Spritual Songs of the African-American Church," Copyright 1997.
