Re: Oprah's Roots
In Response To: Re: Oprah's Roots ()
Now now....I haven't watched the show yet either and we all seem to be passionately for or against celebrities, BUT:
1. Oprah DOES have roots, and I'm sure she had a whizbang team working with her family to document them. Good for her!
2. Her show will reach millions who would never have attended a family history or genealogy class at the local community center, historical/genealogy society, adult ed program or whatever. The show will demonstrate to millions of viewers some of the techniques and some of the possible avenues of research for people who may have dismissed the possibilities of finding anything. Many will be encouraged to begin, continue, or renew their search. The more EVERYBODY researches, the more connections can be made. More local commuties and researchers may become more active.
Well said!!! I watched the program and was genuinely happy for Oprah as her Roots were being uncoverd for her. She was truly amazed/surpised at the information that was uncovered. Her thrill at seeing the documents was very real and all of us who "do" genealogy in a serious vein have had those feelings.
Your paragrah 2 really sums up the value of the show......which in my mind was not Oprah's Roots, but the exposure to millions of folks the pleasure and experiences to be found in researching their own roots.
I hope the show does not convey that a "whizbang team" is required to uncover the facts of our own Roots. A desire, use of tools like Afrigeneas, time, patience and using the documented sources available to all of us will also do the job. AND you will have the added bonus of personal discovery.
