She was also a member of the Bluebird Knoll Community Association and The Interracial Neighbors Club of Laguna Beach.

Johnny Cecil Kennedy was born on October 16, 1921 in Lauderdale, MS., the twelfth of fourteen children of David and Clara Kennedy of Lauderdale, MS. In 1936 he moved to Marion, MS where he met his wife, Willie Esther Russell. He joined Greater St. Peters Church in Marion, MS. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on October 24, 1942 and received an honorable discharge on November 12, 1945.
In 1946 Johnny moved from Meridian, MS to Detroit, Michigan where he was employed at the Farm Crest Bakery. Later he established employment as a molder at Kelsey Hayes Steel Factory for 20, retiring in 1972.
Johnny died at 1:20 p.m. on July 3, 1997 in Detroit, MI. Services were held at Cantrell Funeral Home, 10400 Mack Avenue, Detroit, MI., officiated by Rev. Gwendolyn Grays on Wednesday, July 9, 1997 at 11:30 a.m. Interment was at Trinity Cemetery, 5210 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, MI.
His nickname was "Pa-Pa" and "Duke". Johnny was a "Jack of All Trades" but was most valuable as a Master Mechanic. He could tell you what was wrong with a car just by a car driving past or smelling the fumes. He was also a historian, full of pertinent information about life, love, and happiness. He was A man of humor that could make the world laugh.
