The African-American history calendar

The African-American history calendar

BellSouth, along with The State, the University of South Carolina, ETV, WIS-TV and the state Department of Education, will unveil its 17th S.C. African-American History calendar at the Koger Center tonight at 7. Here are the 2007 honorees, their hometowns and professions:

Charles and Valerie Aiken, Columbia, business. Theirs is the only black-owned, licensed, Medicare-certified home health agency in South Carolina, according to the calendar. They have a 20-year career in home health care and seven offices in South Carolina and one in Augusta.

The late George Elmore, Holly Hill, civil rights. Elmore was a civil rights pioneer who won the right for black people to vote in the Democratic primary. His successful lawsuit established that legal precedent in 1947.

Lydia Sharon Garrett, Columbia, entertainment. This C.A. Johnson High School graduate is an actor, comedian, interpretive dancer and motivational speaker with a long list of TV credits.

Patricia Sowell Harris, McBee, business. Harris is global chief diversity officer for McDonald’s Corp., making her one of the highest-ranking black women in corporate America.
