Re: find a grave.com
In Response To: find a grave.com ()

Find A Grave is a great site and it has assisted me in an effort to document the local history in our community.

For example on my Arkansas Freedmen website, I have posted the burial sites of black soldiers who served in the Civil War from our community and who are buried in our community.
http://www.arkansasfreedmen.com/natcem.htm

The names of every soldier is there, and by clicking onto the name of the soldier, the images of the headstones will appear. The photos of gravesites, rest on Find A Grave. This effort was so successful, that we have photographed not only the national cemeteries in the area, but a host of other black burial grounds and they are also on the website. This is a way to document those burial sites that are quickly disappearing as well.

The result is that a family living in California, found an image of their ancestor that they had only heard of. This past Memorial Day 25 of the descendants of Adam Westfield (whose stone is featured on the web page, at Dripping Springs cemetery) travelled to Arkansas, and paid homage to their ancestor, and had a chance to walk on the same soil as he did. For many, now in their 60s this was their first trip to Arkansas.

Find a Grave allows people to upload images of the deceased and/or photos of their gravestones. I urge those of you who are documenting your family history to consider using Find A Grave as a way of preserving the history of your community and of your family as well.
