Re: We Are The Chosen
In Response To: Re: We Are The Chosen ()

I've been researching that very same slave manifest for some time. One night this spring while half-listening to the PBS special about
the Quilters of Gees Bendn(Alabama), I sat straight up. On that same manifest are people whose last name in 1870 is Gee. According to the
Gee's Bend story, the Gee Family owned a large plantation in Alabama. The plantation owner died and 2 relatives came to take over the plantation, but they ran into financial trouble. Supposedly,
another relative, Mark Pettway I believe bought out the 2 Gee brothers, brought in more slaves and gave every slave his last name,
Pettway.

I haven't been able to find a connection to James B. Hawkins and the Gees or the Pettways, but perhaps some of the slaves that J. Hawkins brought over were from Mark Pettway's North Carolina plantation.

I looked at the 1867b Texas voter's registratin and saw the info on John and Julian Petteway as well as the Gees and Alstons.

Good luck!
