Caroline County, VA: Shakespeare, Jackson, Rollins, Buckner
The information you posted is found in “Caroline County African American Freeman Bureau Records” of African-American children acknowledged by their fathers in Caroline County, VA in 1866. If you also check the cohabitation records for African Americans in the same county and year, you’ll find that Matilda Shakespeare, 28, is listed with other children of Sancho Shakespeare, 66, and Lucinda Jackson, 63. Sancho was born in Spotsylvania County and Lucinda in Caroline County. Both had been held in bondage by Mary Wigglesworth of Spotsylvania County.
I also found Sauker Shakespear, 79, and Lucinda Shakespear, 68, in the 1880 census for Port Royal, Caroline, VA. Their household included a grandson, George Rollins. A child named John H. Shakespeare, possibly another grandson of Sancho/Sauker and Lucinda, was counted in the household of neighbors Peter and Francis Buckner. This child is probably the same John Shakespeare, 34, counted in 1910 census with wife Sarah Ann, 32, in Port Royal, Caroline, VA.
