Re: Wright, Flippo, Taliaferro: Caroline Co., VA

Wright, Flippo, Taliaferro in Caroline Co., VA

My research includes Rev. Walker Tolliver/Taliaferro, pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Harrisburg, PA; born 1854 in or near the town of Madison in Caroline County, VA; died 1931 in Harrisburg, PA.

In an 1866 register of former slaves cohabiting as husband and wife, former slaveholders Horace Wright and A. Flippo (probably Albert R. Flippo) of Caroline County are listed as “last owners” of Walker’s parents Walker Taliaferro Sr. and Patsy Williams Taliaferro. Letty Hart, mother of Patsy Williams Taliaferro, may be the same woman identified in some documents as Letty Flippo. Patsy's mother Letty was born circa 1800 and died circa 1900.

In 1853, slaveholder Littleton Flippo, a farmer and merchant of Caroline County, VA, insured the life of a slave named Walker. African-American Taliaferro and Flippo/Flipper families in Caroline County, VA may be related to Festus and Isabella Flipper of Atlanta, GA. Their son Henry O. Flipper was the first African-American graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Their son Joseph was a bishop of the A.M.E. Church in Atlanta. The father of this family, Festus Flipper, was taken from VA to GA by slave trader Ephraim Ponder. In Caroline County, VA, several members of African-American Flippo/Flipper families were formerly held in bondage by Addison Flippo or Fanny McKenna.
