PERKINS TO DISCUSS NEWSPAPER RESEARCH AT GENEALOGY EVENT
STAFF
08/08/2006

The East Texas Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. Saturday in Taylor Auditorium at the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College Ave., Tyler.

Guest speaker will be Paula Perkins, who will present the program called "Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Finding Your Newsworthy (and not so newsworthy) Ancestors Through Newspaper Research."

"Looking for birth, death, marriage, divorce, shipping lists, train routes, murder and mayhem? Secular and denominational newspapers have been microfilmed from across the United States and available through interlibrary loan and many have been digitalized," ETGS Publicity Director Scott Fitzgerald said.

State and local newspapers are archiving and digitalizing their newspapers and have searchable indexes to their databases online, he said.

"Both printed and online indexes will help guide you to newspapers and locations of where the newspaper can be found. Come find how to locate newspapers around the country locally to assist you in your genealogical pursuits of putting the pieces of the puzzle together," Fitzgerald said.

A native Texan, Ms. Perkins has more than 25 years of genealogical experience in research, speaking and teaching on the subject of family history.

Approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the regular program and refreshments, the ETGS Computer Interest Group will meet with Beverly Bailey Odom, who will lead a round table discussion on "Basic Computer Tasks."

The ETGS also will sponsor a "Junior Genealogy Class" at 10 a.m. Saturday featuring Frances Grochowski. She will present a program called "Who Are Grandma and Grandpa?" The class will meet on the second Saturday for five months and is designed to introduce the participants to the basics in genealogy research. The class will be limited to first 15 registered.

ETGS meeting are free and open to the public.
