Those seeking to learn a little or a lot about their family history have only to head to the Ventura County Fair's Hobby Department in the Gem and Mineral Building, where 24 volunteers and computers are on hand to help daily.

The genealogy booth was launched Wednesday, opening day of the 2006 fair at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura. The family history and genealogy booth will have six computers with DSL Internet access available.

Visitors to the booth will have access to a plethora of information, such as the 480,000-name African-American registry of the Freedman's Bank; the U.S. Social Security Death Index; and all available data from the United States, British and Canadian census indexes.

In keeping with the family search experience, the fair's Hobbies, Models and Collections Department has also added a genealogy exhibit featuring area residents' collections of historical photos and documents, needlepoint and artistic family pedigree charts, heirloom family pedigree charts and family portraiture and other family heirloom collections.

For those just beginning to assemble their own family history, family history booth staff will be on hand each day to assist in searching and organizing family history data. Other available resources will include access to familysearch.org, a free searchable genealogical database that has the world's largest collection of genealogical records, and free access to the full Ancestry.com subscriber-only package.

Visitors may also obtain a CD-ROM disk of Personal Ancestral File (PAF) 5.2, computer software created for storing and organizing family history research. Although the software will be available at a nominal cost ($1), fair patrons will find it comparable in value to family history software packages that are sold for a premium in most stores.

The family history booth will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 13.

Volunteers manning the genealogy booth are from the Ventura County and Conejo Valley genealogical societies; the Ventura Family History Center; and from the Family History Centers in Camarillo, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks. The addresses and hours of the centers are available at familysearch.org.
