I feel the same way. I want to know. A lot of us look so much alike.
Slaveholders died and left a will and an inventory of their slaves. But,
the distribution of property might show that three slave brothers were
distributed one to the slaveholder's son, one to a daughter, and one
to another daughter.
The slave that went to the slaveholder's son might take the same
name as the slaveholder. But, the two that went to the daughters,
might take the names of the daughter's husbands. So this means
that descendants of the three slave brothers are closely related
even though they have different surnames and may have relocated
to another county or state with their new owners. The descendants
will, eventually, tell someone that they can't be related because
they are from X county or state and their people are from Z county
But, someone in these groups, unknowingly, got together. Offspring
came along. Someone remembered a story about the split of the slave
brothers and felt the story should not be told. This could be one of the
eight million stories or "sleeping dogs".
