Another version of the "Let sleeping dogs lie" appears to be "Let the myth continue".
I've run into the "research" of some ancestors from my mother's paternal lines who have written and perpeuated an "embellished" history of that particular family line. An ancestor wrote a "family history" ca 1930 about this family line. The begat's, names, dates and places are really a treasure and helped me tremendously when I started putting the information into a genealogy software package about 15 years ago.
The embellishment comes into play when this ancestor speaks to how the family patriarch was manumitted, who his slave-owning father was, how he came to settle in this area, how he came by the land the family lived on, etc.
Using that written history as a guideline we acquired the manumission paper, freedom registration paper, marriage record, deed of conveyance for the land purchased, church records, census and other documents, etc. dating from 1813 to the present that conflict with what was written about our family origins.
I have been told by descendants of this ancestor's direct lines that what I've discovered are "the white man's records" and they are not to be believed. The truth is in the oral history as written and told by "grandpa".
So we have "Let the myth continue" along with "Let sleeping dogs lie".
