In my own family, we have a similar rift that dates back to the early 1900's. Luckily my granny knew the truth and told me as a child so I was able to pass the info on to others in the family. My grandmother's grandmother married a younger man and didn't want him to know that she had older children by previous relationships. My grandfather had to refer to his mother as Cousin Emma whenever she came to vist. This charade lasted until Emma died. When her adult twins from her younger husband found about about my great-grandfather and his sister, my great aunt Minnie, they stopped talking to our side of the family and moved to California, never to be heard from again.
If you can figure out what happened between the brothers, maybe you can find a way to reconcile everyone so that people won't be afraid to attend family events.
