Alex Haley Nephew Speaks

Chris Haley, whose uncle, Alex Haley, wrote the novel "Roots," spoke at the Jack B. Kussmaul Theatre at Frederick Community College on Saturday. He was there to help drum up interest in building a museum in Frederick County dedicated to black history.

Mr. Haley is director of research for the study of the legacy of slavery in Maryland at the Maryland State Archives. He also serves as secretary of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes the appreciation and understanding of black history.

"We are all part of one family," Mr. Haley said.

Members of the African American Resource & Cultural Heritage Society of Frederick County (AARCH) organized the event with support from several local organizations and individuals. They hoped it would increase interest in building a local black history museum.
