Susan, you are right.
Although I knew that my ancestors were slaves, when I found their names, ages, CHATTEL NUMBERS, AND VALUES when they were sold from their plantation, I almost fell over.
My ancestors were sold from a plantation on Butler's Island, Georgia.
I was able to track my family (back to the 1760s) through the slaveowner's personal records (Major Pierce Butler was a senator from South Carolina). I was also able to track other families that were sold from the plantation during that time.
Finding my folks on a slave auction list was my most interesting discovery.
