Re: "Let sleeping dogs lie."
In Response To: "Let sleeping dogs lie." ()

Initially I skipped over these postings, but I finally decided to at least read one. From the one, I continued to read them all. I'm glad I did! I laughed with relief that I can relate to 98% of them.
I did my mother's tree dating back to 1795, documenting 97% of what I learned. Everyone was helpful, met cousins from across the U.S. that were glad to help with pics, stories, obituaries...etc. Everyone was more than satisfied that the family history is going to be perserved.
Now my father's side is a whole different matter. My father was born in Alabama. When questioning those cousins of his mother's side, they spill their guts about relatives they don't like. On my father's paternal side-no one knows their butts from a hole in the ground. I don't ask difficult questions...I inquire about their parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles...basic info you would think.

While on a trip to Alabama, I went to the Perry County Courthouse. I found my paternal grandparents marriage license. My granddad was married using the Montgomery name and shortly thereafter just up and started using his stepfather's last name of Bennett.

The South is a whole 'nother culture. Secrets down there are things that are known to many other people. One cousin I asked if she had any old pics..her response was "they didn't take pics back in them days". I didn't tell her that I had some pics from back in those days...the same days are grandfather had come from, I had gotten pics of two of his siblings. Some relatives click better with their own generation, so I've learned to get with someone that I can go through to get the information. Someone they feel comfortable opening their big mouths too.

I really thank all of you that posted. Thanks for making me smile.
Eileen
