Re: "Let sleeping dogs lie."
In Response To: "Let sleeping dogs lie." ()
My equivalent of that was "You don't need to know," spoken by my grandfather's sister in response to a question about her parents on my very first attempt at family history.
She did finally relent and give me names of her siblings, some of them I'd never heard of. I wondered at the time, "What could be so shameful that I don't need to know? They weren't married? What?" After all, they were born into slavery.
Then I found their marriage record, and thought, "Well they were married so what could she have possibly meant?"
And this was from the great-aunt who could answer half of my questions of "How am I kin to so-and-so," were she sitting next to me right now, God rest her soul!
Oh, yes. And I know for certain ain't nobody on that side passing.... ;^)
