I've found some very interesting discoveries. One that kind of hit me was finding out that my grandfather changed his name. The last name that I lived with until marriage really was not my maiden name. Oral history says that he changed it because he was moonshining and law was about to catch him, so he left the county and changed his name. Not just his last name, but his first also. The good thing is that he took his mother's maiden name. So, I guess you can say he "kept it in the family." My dad said he always wondered why all of his father's siblings had one last name and his father had another. I solved the mystery through the census records. Of course, I got over the discovery and history continues to goes on.
