Re: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames
In Response To: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames ()
Very informative thread.
My research in Loudoun VA has shown that a bit under half of persons I have indentified have name of last slaveholder.
From the other half - the names are of a former slaveholder (prior to last) in 2/3rds of the cases.
Of those who adopted new names many are the surname of a famous person (sometimes the whole name like "George Washington")
Other names indicate freed staus - like Newman or Freeman.
A few names seem to indicate a county of VA - like Essex, oe a city like Baltimore.
