Re: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames

Very informative thread.

My research in Loudoun VA has shown that a bit under half of persons I have indentified have name of last slaveholder.

From the other half - the names are of a former slaveholder (prior to last) in 2/3rds of the cases.

Of those who adopted new names many are the surname of a famous person (sometimes the whole name like "George Washington")

Other names indicate freed staus - like Newman or Freeman.
And many seem to indicate a job/skill - Cooper, Baker, Smith, Cook, Weaver, Mason, Carpenter - and a few have other clues - like Redman for a family reputed to have native ancestry.

A few names seem to indicate a county of VA - like Essex, oe a city like Baltimore.
