Re: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames
In Response To: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames ()
In a study I conducted eighteen years ago I collected the information on applications for certificates of freedom in Baltimore County, Maryland between 1840-1864. I chose only to study the manumiited slaves whose full names had been logged.
I published 468 slave names along with their manumitter's name. Only twenty-eight (6%) had the same name as their former owners. In some of those cases the former owner was a father manumitting his wife or child.
The study was first published in the "Flower of the Forest-Black Genealogical Journal" v.1 No.8, 1989
The article was entitled "Baltimore County Applications For Certificates of Freedom 1840-1864"
