Re: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames
In Response To: Percentage of Slaves w/ Masters' Surnames ()
My paternal grandmother's first husband was a STOUTENBERG or STOUTENBURG(H) which appears to be Dutch (most hits for that name are in the Netherlands) and there are no more in the surrounding county. I found her Stoutenberg father-in-law in the 1870 census with a white family with a different surname.
Her 3rd marriage was to my GILLET/GILLETT/GILLETTE grandfather. All of these people (her first father-in-law as well as her 3rd FIL) were in the same county by 1870, some by 1866 (per marriage info).
No slaveowners with either those names to be found in the area, and so far I have been unsuccessful in identifying a slaveowner.
