Yes, there was some mention of midwiving in the 21st century. However, the rules are more stringent than they were 100 years ago. Doctors and hospitals are very involved. Nowadays, many ob/gyns have midwives associated with their facility. This gives the patient the option of making their personal selection--midwife or obstetrician--still under the watchful eye of the doctor.
Sometime during the 1940's, states wanted midwives to take additional training and issued license; to be renewed every year (I know this is true for the state of Alabama--midwife training took place at Tuskegee Institute). At times, the doctor would have to give written permission for a midwife to attend a woman during labor or other type of illnesses related to childbirth. There was a display of a written doctor's note pertaining to this type of situation.
