I received an email encouraging me to enter more information about our family:
ADDITIONAL INFO Re: find history JOSHUA COMPTON, Davidson Co, TN
My family is the William Compton family of Davidson
Co, Hillsboro Pike area, 11th district .. he arrived
in Davidson Co about 1782, was a big landowner with
slaves. He had 2 sons: Felix and Henry W.
"From 1883 to 1895 the name of Joshua Compton was
listed along with John Overton, Tom Treanor and the
other Caucasian squires."
The Quarterly says that these Comptons were lineal
descendants of William Compton who accompanied Lord
Baltimore to the Virginia Colony in 1667 .. we've
never been able to find the ship manifest that lists
this ancestor's name.
Henry W. Compton born at Bone's Station, KY in 1806
settled the home site on Tyne Boulevard and is
buried in the adjacent family graveyard ... we read
Henry W. Compton's first family was black and the
details I gave in previous message was found in the
Hillsboro Pike section, Tennessee Historical
We know our white Compton descendent family .. we
are very interested in the family we know nothing
about .. Joshua, Henry, and sister_____ and their
Henry W. married Ann Ward and had 4 daughters ..
these are the people in his will 1895. No mention
of the black family. He had provided well and
educated the black family and we can only assume
that Joshua (brother and sister) were established
and did not need assistance from his will .. or
perhaps the Catholic family he married into on April
28, 1874 did not know of his first family?
We are ashamed that our ancestors were involved in
slavery, but we can not do anything to change that
fact. We are interested in geneology of ALL of our
family .. we would be very excited to know more than
what we can read in the Quarterly ... what were
their lives like, their children .. what was the
mother's real name, other than the name of Henry W.
Compton? Were Joshua or Henry in war? Did sister
ever come back to TN or stay in NY? Maybe people
will think we have no right to this knowledge, since
we are not black, but we are interested in ALL of
our ancestors and family story. Perhaps the family
of Josh would like to know about Caucasian "roots"
... or perhaps they do not care to know. We are
willing to share all that we know about our
ancestors. I hope nothing I have written is
offensive, it is not meant to be anything except
interest in all of our family. Thank you for your
help Edra COMPTON Green
