Have you seen the breakdown of race in the 1870 census for N.C.? I am working on the House family of Rowan and Cabarrus County, N.C. and found it most interesting. Also what really got to me was when I was looking into the 1860 census of Cabarrus County and noticed my great grandfather listed on the free schedule and he was a laborer/carpenter listed on the same household with a white family.
