Mississippi is of course full of places with historical names like these, one is even unfortunately called "nigger ridge" As for the word Hoodoo, this was an often used word in my home. My grandmother used the word in relation to the voodoo religion. Her grandmother was a former slave and all were residents of the Delta of Mississippi. Originally the family hailed from Virginia. In her context you could "hoodoo" someone. This meaning you could cast a spell but in the case of "hoodooing" them, the spell cast would always be a bad thing. Stuff like putting down dust and any number of other things which could be done to cause harm to an individual. Ain't it grand what a rich interesting history we have?
