Petronia Tucker, 80, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, in Morton, Ill.
Petronia, affectionately known as Pete, was born on Oct. 18, 1933, in Milledgeville, Ga., to Richard Sr. and Essie (Edwards) Slater.
Pete graduated high school in Milledgeville and later studied home economics at Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga. Her first husband, Major Hammell Jr., preceded her in death. After moving to Peoria, Ill., and marrying Andrew Tucker Jr., Pete launched a career as a site coordinator with the Peoria chapter of Head Start.
Pete is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Andrew Tucker Jr. of Lewistown, Ill.; three children, Angela (Roland) Walker of Peoria, Major (Carol) Hammell III of Marietta, Ga., and Andrew Tucker III of Peoria; one beloved granddaughter, Courtney Hammell of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Florence Johnson of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., and Mamie (Abelard) Harmon of Evanston, Ill.; and one sister-in-law, Bertha Slater of Milledgeville, Ga.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at Simons Mortuary, with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Frances Kenon will officiate. Pete will be laid to rest at Salem-Wilcoxen Cemetery off Illinois Route 78 to County Highway 4 in Liverpool Township, rural Lewistown, Ill. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
