AfriGeneas Writers Forum
This is Great!
This is great! I am so glad to see the implementation of a forum like this! I look forward to participating, learning, and growing.
I am currently re-writing the history of one particular line of my family....my mother's paternal family. This part of my family was fortunate to gain a lot of oral history from my mother's grandfather, a former slave, who died in 1937 at age 91. Fortunately for my family and me, great-grandpa wasn't a tight-lipped man!
I feel that it is VERY important to write about the history of your family. Have something on paper for the future generations, so they'll know where they come from. Tell them about their lives. Add more than just names, dates and places. I think it's important to even talk about the time frame which they were living in, to give the family an idea of what our ancestors experienced.
One of my Mom's first cousins is 87 years old and grew up in his grandfather's house. He was very close to his grandfather and remembered a bunch of stories his grandfather had told him. When we are fortunate to have elderly relatives that can tell us things about our history, it is so important that we try to gain this knowledge and record it! Once they are gone, that's it! The history goes with them.
Each time I talk with this particular relative, he tells me something new. Something will trigger his memory and he'll all of a sudden remember something that his grandfather had told him. One recent story was about one of my great-grandfather's brothers who got sold away. My cousin remembered the story that his grandfather told about how and why this brother was sold. And you know what, I am going to include it in my history write-up as well.
Some parts of our history can be rather depressing, but at the same time, we need to know what our ancestors endured, know what struggles they went through, and pass these stories on to show our family how strong our ancestors were and how they survived so that their future generations can have a much better life.
I am really glad that this forum has been started.
