Reflections

AfriGeneas Friends,

I am sad to hear of June Jordan's passing. She was the first well-known person I interviewed
in Santa Barbara for African Kaleidoscope on UCSB's radio station. Circa 1986. The interview took place at the B&B on Anapamu St. where the University often put up its visiting writers and scholars.

I was such a novice that the interview was technically unusable for broadcast. I had borrowed a vintage tape recorder and used a recycled cassette tape. The machine did not erase as it recorded so the interiew was indecipherable. I learned a painful and valuable lesson but the experience was wonderful. She was an outspeaking poet with strong political views on international struggles and world peace.

I was very inspired by our conversation.

Following the interview, I drove her to the SB Airport and took pictures with her camera.

A very pleasant memory.

Years later, I supported her nomination to the California Poets in the Schools Board. We never met again but I always think of her as one of my sisters on the path.

Sojourner
