Can you give us any tips on the best way to create journals?

I'm not necessarily talking about genealogy research journals, instead, I'm referring to personal or family journals.

It seems to me that this type of journal will lead into writing the family history that Art mentioned in his post.

I've made a number of attempts, but nothing that was sustaining. I need your help!
