Ayo's Journey ~ Santa Barbara Opening
In Response To: The AfriGeneas© Poet ()

Ayo's Journey" is a story of slavery. Produced in conjunction with the current Karpeles Manuscript Library exhibit "A Slave Ship Speaks: The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie," it tells a somber tale about a dark chapter of American history.

And yet, as they describe the work, creators Sojourner Kincaid Rolle and Val Limar keep using the term "celebration."

"It's a celebration in storytelling, music, dance and visual art," said Rolle, the well-known Santa Barbara poet who created the original text. "We should not forget our history. But in remembering our history, we should celebrate our survival."
