Re: a lynching in Roane County 1863

Hello Allison:

You pose an interesting question. But before I continue, let me pose to you a question. Are you the author of "Pretty is as Pretty Does"?

If your proposed book is a novel, then you can be a lot more creative with facts, rumored to be etc. than if it were a biography or history book.

Perhaps your question also concerns the very "tragic and unforgivable history" of lynching in this country. It's a very sensitive issue. If you can find historical facts about this lynching in old newspapers, so much the better. From what you've uncovered it seems there is little information to confirm that it happened.

Can you find the names of any of the slaves in Cooper's household? Perhaps that might lead to some clues.

Have you read Lillian Smith's "Strange Fruit"? The subjects are not dissimilar.

Perhaps you can tell me more or some of our Afrigeneas Writers Groups may help.
