a lynching in Roane County 1863

I'm thinking of writing a novel based loosely on a lynching that took place in Roane County, TN about 1863. The man who was murdered was blamed for the shooting of a white man named Azariah Cooper, a distant ancestor of mine.

The man who was lynched was apparently a slave of Cooper's neighbor and the story that's told is that he had a "romantic interest" in one of
Cooper's house slaves. -Given the nature of slavery, you have to wonder about Cooper's relationship with his own female slave.- If I write the story, it will be fiction but I'd like to know as much as I can about the facts first. I'm interested in the difference between an event that happens and the stories that are told about that event.

I'm in contact with the state archives and have found some letters from the Cooper family but
nothing about these killings.

thank you,

Alison Clement
