I may have overlooked it during my reading of this beautiful story, but what state is this? The story almost looks like something that had happened in my own family. I even notice the Crowell name, which was my grandma's name in North Carolina, Rowan County to be exact. Her mother was Rachael, a Cherokee, married to Andrew or sometimes called Andy Crowell. Grandma was born in 1866, and in 1886 she married John House, also of Rowan County. His father was half white, and I mean almost near white, but was called a mulatto.
