The photo is of a much younger man. Had he been a slave he would have been born almost 100 years before 1947.
The Lewis Plantation (turpentine) is near Tampa. When the turpentine business dwindled, the owner looked for another source of income. In the 1930's Pearce Lewis and his redneck advertising campaigns used images of 'ole Uncle Smith and pickininny's (thank goodness I don't know how to spell that word) to promote the plantation as a Southern attraction. The plantation is described in a book, "Roadside Paradise".
The twist is to those stereotypic photos is Afrigeneas. I wonder how Pearce would have depicted us in 2002? Electronic keys clicking our thoughts about the very handsome face of a black man posed at a tacky roadside attraction.
