I was spellbound by what I read and would like to learn more. My grandfather was a preacher in the Statesboro/Bulloch County area and both my parents came from that area. Though I am white, I grew up without indoor plumbing and was ignorant of what my black neighbors experienced until I went down to Mississippi in the summer of 1964 and heard stories from my fellow civil rights workers. I was ostracised from my family for a while but glad to participate in that historic project. I have lived in Boston and in Montreal for many years and have been a teacher for more than twenty-five years. I am retired now and would like to return to learn more about my own family as well as about how my relatives adjusted to the change in the racial climate. I would like to hear more about your discoveries.
I think we whites are very ignorant about our history which includes our treatment of blacks. I am, even at 64, still optimistic that Christ's words are appropriate:"Ye shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free." It applies to history as well as the Gospels.
