This year marks the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Paris.
The link below will take you to UNESCO's announcement of the 2006 Congress. The introduction mentions:
"The African Community of Culture and the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University (USA) will open the celebrations at the Sorbonne University to the 50th anniversary of the 1st International Congress of Black Writers and Artists, which took place on 19 September 1956 in the hallowed precincts of the Sorbonne’s Descartes Amphitheatre."
The site includes a fascinating poster, an image of a black man drawn by Picasso. Although the UNESCO programme links are in French, you can find a description of the 2006 Congress in English at the link below:
