LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 21, 2006) − Nikky Finney, professor of creative writing at the University of Kentucky, has been appointed acting director of the African American Studies and Research Program in UK's College of Arts and Sciences.

A native of Conway, S.C., Finney brings to the position a nationally prominent reputation as the author of major books of poetry, "Wings of Grace," "Rice," and "The World Is Round." "Rice" won the prestigious PEN Open Book Award. In addition, Finney has compiled a collection of short stories in a widely read anthology titled "Heartwood."

Steven Hoch, dean of the UK College of Arts and Sciences said, "Nikky has an exceptionally creative imagination, and I know she will apply that talent to her new administrative duties.”

Colleague Doris Wilkinson, professor of sociology, said, “Her writings show her love for African-American history and culture, nature, family, and a grasp of the essence of the human spirit. She is gifted and creative and viewed by poets, critics and other members of the literary world and social science community as an inspiring, informed and imaginative writer of poetry and prose that reveal profound comprehension and insight into the human life course.”
