Re: Remembering the Berlin Olympics and Beyond

Hi George & Family, George you say '68 was your Olympics, my favorite
The '56 Olympics were held in Australia and the basketball team had All American's, Bill Russell & K.C. Jones from the Univ. of San Francisco and Carl "Sugar" Cain from the Univ. of Iowa in the starting line-up (3 African-American's, a first I believe) played their final exibition game at the old Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco before sailing to Australia. The Cow Palace, San Francisco's major arena at that time had a previous committment. (Circus, as I remember) Anyway, the U.S. Olympic team played against a team composed of players from the local colleges and the area Military bases. Yours truly participated in that event and one of my teammates was John Grigsby, brother of Frank Robinson, the baseball Hall of Famer. John and I were members of the Parks AFB, CA basketball team. Oh no, I was not that good, they just needed local Air Force represenatation. John was very good and had a couple of son's who played their college ball for UC-Berkely. A fond memory with a little genealogy thrown in. Art Thomas
