Re: Sharing Memories of Years Ago
In Response To: Sharing Memories of Years Ago ()

Separate Facilities: I tell my California friends that little Black
girls in the south had the strongest legs/thighs in the world. My mother
would admonish us every time we went into that god-awful "colored"
restroom in the bus depot (the only one available in "town") "Don't you
sit on that seat!!" So you learned to 'hover' but not touch, requiring
strong muscles.... ;^) And I remember trying to explain to my visiting
California cousins WHY they could not use the "White" bathroom. They
just figured they had two to use and why not that one? What do you mean
"the white bathroom?" This would have been in the early 1950s. The
Safeway store had the two water fountains. As I recall "theirs" had a
cooler, but "ours" was just tap water.

I don't remember not being able to try on clothes and don't think it was
a problem where I lived in Arkansas. On the other hand, we had so few
'store bought' clothes that it was likely not an issue. {I vividly
remember two dresses made from print flour sacks when I was 8th grade.
These sacks were printed "special" to not look like flour sacks, no
labels printed on them, but actual designs, like flowers and birds,
because they knew folks used them for clothing.} We got most of our
readymade stuff from Montgomery Ward's catalog, and later Sears.

Sometimes I check with older relatives on these questions, and so far
none of my folks have heard of the Coke/Pepsi thing, even a 95-year old.
But, as I said, we were in the heart of "Royal Crown Cola" country. And
the operative word here is 'country.' Five miles from the nearest town
which had a population of less than 7,000. We could not go to the
drive-in theater at all, and sat upstairs in the two regular theaters.
Then I came to California and those seats were the expensive ones, the
"loges!" Who knew??
