Re: Writing Help Sites/Writing Our Stories
In Response To: Writing Help Sites/Writing Our Stories ()
Please share this posting and others with your family history writing group. They are always welcome to visit and post ideas, references and their ancestors' legacy on the Afrigeneas Writers Forum As family journalists we have a great advantage over historians 10 to 20 years ago. The internet provides access to digitized history, databases and information. Equally important is a membership and fellowship with Afrigeneas.
You touched on an important theme. You wrote:
"...but then I realize that I have been documenting my own life and experiences for quite some time. I have written a collection of short stories/memoir pieces of my growing up in the late 50s and 60 in Oakland, California. One has been published in a literary journal and I sent out two others to be reviewed for publication in the last month."
Our own "life and experience", IS history. It's not a final chapter to our family's genealogy but an extension of our ancestors' saga. Our words become "Primary Resources" for later research.
One of my big frustrations is not knowing what my early ancestors thought about their lives, what motivated them to leave one community and move to another, to educate their children, to become musicians. They left no documentation, no letters. So it's important for us to leave a diary for future generations.
Please keep writing about your experience in California. George Geder has written about his life. Just search for Nerd. It's fabulous.
The perception and interpretation of today's African American culture by Blacks and Whites is devastating. It hasn't changed very much over the centuries. Our global profile has just been repackaged to fill the coffers of those who profit from our degradation.
Your ideas about publishing your stories in African American newspapers are a wonderful strategy. Also look for general market publications too. Their editors would certainly be interested in a refreshing history about black life.
So Write Away and tell a different story, the truth about our glorious history.
