Don't Forget Dee Woodtor's Guide
One of the best on line guides for researching and writing family history is on the Afrigeneas site. "African American Genealogy An Online Interactive Guide for Beginners" by Dee Woodtor is for everyone to use....even those of us who have been working on our family history for years. Her suggestions continue to gently nudge me to focus on data and check and double check oral history.
One of my frustrations was and is accepting family lore and poor research from historians as fact...only to discover that my suppositions were incorrect. Then its back to the drawing boards and editing out a chapter of my family history and beginning again.
Has anyone had this problem? Should you include family lore in the text as a sidebar and then write the accurate history?
