Sounds as if you have a good concept of what you want to do. The suggestions/responses have been right on target also.

A couple of genealogy software packages allow for the type on narrative you are looking for in their abilty to 'hook' notes to each individual for those personal comments.

Family Tree Maker & Family Origins are packages I
am familiar with. Family Origins allows for a Photo of each person to be included along side the Vitals and Notes in their printouts.
