Dear Valencia,

I for the first time came across your web site, and really think it is a great approach and system of recording family material! It is really important what you are working on with family geneology! My mother (1911-1995) would have liked to see what can be done nowadays with photos and family history on the web. She was the family geneologist, and in the early 80s compiled a booklet for her and my father's family, then had it printed off. It's in the local (Ohio, Hancock Co.) library, and somehow the Mormon library in Salt Lake City knew of it and got one from her, as did the Library of Congress, though it is simply bound.

In 1987, after a couple of years of my begging my parents to write down the stories of their parents, grandparents, etc., I finally said that all I wanted for Christmas was the stories. She typed up her stories and those of my dad, who had Lou Gehrig's disease by then, and who was becoming increasingly incapacitated. So for Christmas of 1987 my two brothers and I to our delight each received a copy of her and dad's family stories, interspersed with old photos of the people being talked about. Ironically, soon after Christmas he had a fall, and in trying to pick him up my apparently hurt her shoulder. She was sent to rehab, but it got worse and worse and turned out really to be bone cancer. She lost her arm and part of her shoulder, and maybe wouldn't have if the problem was caught sooner. Anyway, if they hadn't written their stories down when they did, neither one of them would have been able to--within months.

They had some really good stories too, though of course now I think of other questions about this or that relative, and wish I could ask them, but it's too late. I brought both of them to Albany on 8/8/88, and Dad only lasted until Thanksgiving, but mom was in pain until 1995. Though in remission, she had shingles and the pain never went away.

It is to my parents that I give my credit for an interest in the past and in family stories as well as community stories, and in the necessity of recording them as soon as possible. Ooooooooo, I wish I could have my grandparents' stories down!

Best wishes to you and yours!

Mary

More to come.
