Writing family histories has helped me
In Response To: Re: Family History as told by Nay ()
When collecting the family information, family members always asked me what was I going to do with that information. At the time, I couldn't give them any definitive answer, largely because I was not sure of what I would do with it myself. But after 10 years of collecting family information I found myself wondering what would happen to it if I suddenly died and my children didn't know what to do with all of my "hard work." I decided to try and put together a story based on oral history and supported by emails, photos, newsclippings, etc. My biggest fear is with the elders dying with stories untold that my children and their children will never realize that we have a history that is not written in books. I am now being encouraged to write more and I am hoping that the very people who were so "tight lipped" with the information about my ancestors would be happy to share additional stories with me and the younger generation. Once I put together all the information, it was like having a child and watching it grow. This has opened up a new door for me - I have grown from a collector to a genealogist to a family story teller. It is a great feeling to be able to put it down into words.
