Actually, George, when Edward Baptist said that historians owe justice to the dead, I did not take it to mean we have to be 100% right in all our interpretations - after all, that is what we do - we interpret - with the best information we have at the time. For example, you remember the "Jefferson and Amanda Cary" piece I posted a couple years ago? Well, that went through several evolutionary changes before I posted it, and after I posted it I revisited some of my evidence and found I had been WRONG about a couple of facts. The version that I uploaded last year to the Afrigeneas library contains the new interpretations. Well, guess what: if I were to upload it again today, there are a couple more things I would change, including reworking some of my narrative to suggest how Amanda took an active role in shaping her own and her family's life, not just passively tagging along as Jefferson's spouse. Doing justice to my Upson County cast of characters may be a lifelong process for me!
